Tình cờ đọc một tựa bài viết trên SciDev.net có cụm từ public good (nguyên văn: clean technology as a public good), lại nhớ đến một cuộc tranh cãi mệt mỏi với một đồng nghiệp về cách dịch từ này, nên ghi lại ở đây vài ý để chính mình nhớ, và chia sẻ với những ai ... không may láng cháng đến trang blog này của mình.

những chỗ in đậm (bold) là mình mới thêm vào để nhấn mạnh. cần lưu ý: public good có khi được đối xử như một từ đếm được (a good, goods), và có khi được đối xử như một từ không đếm được (chỉ dùng the ... good - giống như the young, the old, the ugly vv).
và rắc rối chính là ở chỗ này đây. khi dùng đếm được, thì phải dịch là hàng hóa, dịch vụ (các định nghĩa ở trên đã làm rõ), còn khi không đếm được, thì phải dùng với nghĩa ích lợi (và có thể dùng the public good hoặc the common good, nghĩa giống nhau, cả hai đều dịch là công ích).
chỉ có vậy thôi, ai không tin cứ dùng ngữ học dữ liệu mà kiểm tra (có thể kiểm tra trên google, ai không rõ cách làm thì hỏi chủ nhân của blog này). thế mà mình lại xui xẻo, bị một người biết một mà không biết hai, chê rằng là mình không đúng mà lại còn dám sửa người khác!
thế nên mới nói dịch là một nghề rất là thù địch, có thể bị phục binh bất cứ nơi nào!
